The Monument Inscription...

Texas Historical Commission - Historic Texas Cemetery - Dedicated 1886

"This historic site is part of the bounty given to Louise Jackson for the supreme sacrifice of her husband, Thomas Jackson, at the Battle of the Alamo."

"The King's Highway passed on the western border of this cemetery which was the burial site for settlers and Indians since the early 1800's."

"Rudolph and Eleanora Reeh, interred here, emigrated from Germany in 1844 and 1845. They were part of the first German immigrants to arrive in Indianola, Texas and were part of the first settlers of New Braunfels. Rudolph Reeh served in the Confederate Army during the civil war."

"Jakob and Mary Goll, interred here, settled in Seay, now Wetmore, in 1846. The Golls were active members of La Villita church. In 1861 Jakob Goll founded the first Hermann Sons Lodge in Texas. Harmonia Lodge #1 is still active in San Antonio." April 21, 2001

30-Day Headstone Deposit (Regardless of previously purchased plots)

Headstones must be emplaced within one year of burial at WCCI. Due to recent families neglecting their duties to procure headstones for interred loved ones, WCCI added the following requirement preceding any internment regardless of when plot was purchased.

Refer to: Forms and Handouts below; See: “Contract”; the form name is “Wetmore Community Cemetery Rules and Regulations”. Go to: “Immediate Burial Deposit” on the signature side of form.

If headstone is not currently placed or fully purchased (“Paid in Full”) at time of death, purchaser or designated agent for deceased must show good faith to WCCI by providing a headstone deposit prior to burial.

Deposit is 100% refundable to purchaser or named agent (authorized in writing) contingent only within 30 days from date on receipt of deposit.

NOTE: Regardless of past purchases or verbal agreements with past WCCI staff, internment WILL NOT take place unless WCCI has headstone “Paid in Full” proof of purchase or this deposit.

Date of Death (DoD) Etching for Headstone Already Placed*

$225-250 (Usually)

*WCCI does not provide this service. Cost is based on local monument companies in the San Antonio area. WCCI requires verification via “Paid in Full” receipt by your Headstone Etching Company prior to burial. Purchaser or designated agent for deceased must provide WCCI with copy of “Paid in Full” Receipt prior to burial.

Purchasing Headstones

We do not sell or install Headstones. Only USA owned companies that meet the necessary liability insurance coverage to access WCCI are authorized. We have contact info for companies and some brochures located in our two flyers boxes at the cemetery entrance and at the pavilion.

Columbaria Stone etching is around $400.

Headstones, Plot or Area Restoration

Contact us with your requests, concerns or questions. We can assist in finding local providers or ensure they are authorized access. All work must be approved via WCCI Board vote.

Any company intending to work in WCCI must be approved and have their liability insurance on file and coordinate directly with WCCI for scheduling access around funeral services. Failure to do so will result in charges of a minimum of criminal trespass per Texas Penal Code and you will forfeit future access to cemetery.

“Please understand that WCCI may from time-to-time change, modify, alter, add, or substitute new policies, rules and/or regulations. Reasonable notification will be provided by WCCI via this website platform. It is the responsibility of the plot owner(s) and/or heirs to stay current on the rules and regulations of the cemetery.” Thank you.

Availability:

WCCI currently offers over 240 Burial Spaces for casket or cremation and as of August, 2023 we have added three more Columbaria for 450 Niches.

Wetmore Community Cemetery was professionally surveyed in May, 2018. As we update interred locations we develop more user friendly options to help families find loved ones from across the globe. These points shown below in red identify plot markers, headstones and key points of the cemetery. We will adjust entries in FindAGrave.com and Billiongraves.com and are working on a map to overlay the cemetery using Google Earth.

FAQs

What is a Plot?

Single plot sizes are:

Casket plots are five feet in width by ten feet in length (5’ X 10’)

Cremation plots are five feet in width by five feet in length (5’ X 5’)

The top two feet of the grave (where the headstone is placed) is never disturbed by the company opening or closing the grave. This reduces stone shifting over time and makes it easy if a headstone is preplaced.

What if I have no family but want to be buried at WCCI?

You can purchase a plot with us but must coordinate funeral services with a company that handles this and give them our contact information.

Headstone requirements are the same. If at the time of passing, your named estate representative must provide the deposit or “Paid in Full” receipt prior to burial taking place.

If headstone is installed WCCI will need verification of paid Date of Death (DoD) etching.

Some family members are overwhelmed. How do I know I’m not being pressured by companies?

The more informed you are about subjects, the easier it is to understand the psychological and emotional aspects of this major event.

WCCI recommends you look at Texas Funeral Service Commission (TFSC). TFSC sets standards and guidance for Funeral Services in Texas. They also receive any complaint on funeral service establishments.

Please see:

Consumer Information | TFSC (state.tx.us)

FACTS ABOUT FUNERALS

Each funeral establishment is required to provide the "Facts About Funerals" brochure to all prospective customers when funeral services are discussed.

WCCI is a private cemetery and is not required to provide this data, but regardless if you purchase from us or another cemetery, we want you to know you have options. If you meet with us at the cemetery we will usually have these (English) to take with you. See below for copies of these handouts.

COMPLAINTS

If you have any complaints with any Funeral service or stone companies etc., we urge you to file a formal complaint with the TFSC. Please see: http://tfsc.state.tx.us/complaints.html

¿Alguien habla español?

No. Si desea ayudar a WCCI con los servicios de traducción durante las ventas o reuniones, nos encantaría que nos contactemos. (Google translated from : If you wish to help WCCI in translating during the sales or meetings we would love to be contacted.)

I purchased a tree at my funeral home. When will it be planted at Wetmore?

The funeral homes have never contacted WCCI and usually pocket this money. Unless you donate funds to WCCI for this purpose we will never know your intent. Nine trees were planted in 2021. WCCI would love your help in procuring/planting more throughout the cemetery this year. Contact us at the numbers or email below.

What does the purchase cover?

Costs cover the plot, a lawn maintenance contract, fence repair, insurance, basic publishing/document printing, mail and legal fees. As WCCI is solely operated by volunteers and donations from families. WCCI staff and family maintain the grounds. Church volunteers recently painted the front fence. Also not being a perpetual care cemetery, we keep operational costs to a minimum.

What if I don’t have a Texas Driver’s License or reside out of the state or country?

We use your State DL or ID number for litigation which is if needed. We understand addresses change but we send your certificate and copies of receipts to the address on the picture ID. If you are not a US citizen, we would have to get WCCI Board approval to sell you a plot. All fees and headstone purchases would have to be paid/ verified before burial takes place.

What is required for my loved one to be buried at WCCI?

The deceased must be of Christian faith; be embalmed or cremated, and a concrete (casket / urn) liner or burial vault is required. A copy of the Report of Death must be sent to WCCI staff by Funeral Chapel/ Mortuary handling your loved one. Headstones must be in place within one calendar year of burial. If marker is in place, the Date of Death (DOD) etching must be paid prior to burial taking place.

Can I buy a family Plot?

Plot sizes of two single 5’ X 10’s (called a double plot) are the most commonly purchased. We have recently sold eight graves (four 10’ X 10’s in a square). We will work your family if this is your intent, but discuss this with your family to secure this purchase in order to ensure the plots are available.

Can a bench or border be placed by me at WCCI?

Currently, nothing may be added to gravesites. This includes benches, borders, trees, grass, plants and or statues, lights, garland, wind socks, chimes, fans, bells, toys, money, alcohol etc. Any unauthorized articles will be removed immediately. Any items left at gravesite that damage equipment used to maintain area, ie. lawn maintenance shall be billed/ charged to the plot purchaser.

I put very sentimental (or expensive) items or trinkets at my loved ones grave and now its gone.

The By-laws are given to every purchaser and it is their responsibility to read information and disseminate to friends and family. (See current By-Laws below) Purchaser agrees in writing at time of purchase they will not place unauthorized items at or around gravesites as they will be removed without notice (per WCCI Rules and Regulations, pg1 and By-laws, Article 16) or possibly stolen. WCCI is not responsible for removed or stolen items.

What is the headstone requirement and why do I have to purchase one within 30 days at WCCI?

Sadly, handshakes no longer work today. WCCI had over fifteen graves without headstones. Families or named executors were not holding up their obligations. Unfortunately, we had delinquent stones ranging from three to over 22 years. Only through litigation have we been able to rectify these cases.

The headstone deposit was created to ensure WCCI has proof a USA made and professionally installed stone is placed within one year of burial.

Handmade and Stones from outside the USA are prohibited. WCCI must be provided a verifiable “paid in full” receipt by purchaser within 30 calendar days or lose their stone deposit. The stone is still required to be set within a year of burial by the purchaser.  We then start litigation action. This is clear in our purchase agreement.

Currently, depending on type & color, US monument companies report 8-10 months for stones to arrive (if not on hand) before placed in queue for cutting.

We understand many headstone companies may only require half down to order the stone but WCCI requires proof “paid in full” or the deposit.

You still have to sign approval of the etching proof before inscription begins. This is how the monument companies work with you.

This 30-day deposit ensures this is set in motion.

Refer to: Forms and Handouts below; See: “Contract”; the form name is “Wetmore Community Cemetery Rules and Regulations”. Go to: “Immediate Burial Deposit” on the signature side of form.

Can a headstone just be placed by me at WCCI?

No. Any unauthorized person, business or company found accessing cemetery other than for visitation shall be charged with a minimum, criminal trespass per Texas Penal Code and forfeit future access to cemetery.   The USA owned/ operated companies that make and install your headstone must have a $1 Million-dollar minimum liability policy on file with WCCI to access WCCI.  They MUST coordinate directly with cemetery staff prior to install. Any company not doing this is banned from access and possibly criminally charged IAW State and local laws.

Why are flowers, or floral arrangements/ items missing from a grave?

We are starting quarterly cleanups. We ask for your help to keep the cemetery clean and pick up floral arrangements within 10-14 days (per WCCI Rules and Regulations, pg1 and By-laws, Article 16) of an event like birthdays, holidays or funerals.

If you see trash or weathered flowers, especially items blowing across the grounds, we ask your help in removal and disposal.

Forms and Handouts

See here for By-Laws and various forms you can download or show family. Contracts are in English only. Please understand these are legal documents and you are to provide your own translation services if you wish to purchase burial space with us.

Please understand WCCI may from time to time change, modify, alter, add, or substitute new policies, rules and/or regulations.  It is the responsibility of the plot owner(s) and/or heirs to stay current on the rules and regulations of the cemetery.
